Movie Experience in Vox Cinema – Marina Mall

Popcorn

To beat the Christmas longing and homesickness last December 25, hubby and I headed to watch a movie – “The Hobbit”. We were excited because a week prior we watched already the making of “The Hobbit”.

I was more appreciative when watching the movie because I understood the hard work and effort they put into the production in order to create amazing effects. Though there were some scenes that didn’t excite me anymore because I knew already the tricks they did to come up with those scenes.

Anyway we watched the movie in 3D in Vox Cinema in Marina Mall.

The ticket is AED 60 per person and it includes disposable 3D glasses. They have a good waiting area that serves as restaurant too.

And of course, the cinema experience is not complete without the popcorn, right? So we ordered for cheese flavor along with the nachos. For the first time I kept on munching the popcorn until it was over. I am not fond of popcorn at all and oftentimes the bucket of popcorn is consumed solely by my hubby.

Inside the cinema – it was clean. Chairs were comfortable and in good condition. The last row is VIP seats where the charge is more for extra comfort. The audio and visual aspects of the cinema were excellent too.

My conclusion – our cinema experience was really great. I just hated the ending of the movie. It keeps you thinking what’s next. There are more to unfold in the story. It seems that we have to wait for the sequel then.

Where to Buy Quality Nuts in Abu Dhabi?

Al Rifai

You will usually find a packet of nuts in my bag and office drawers. It is a saving grace when my stomach starts to growl. This was the healthy trick that I learned during my pregnancy in 2011 which I still continue nowadays.

I usually shop for nuts (mainly cashews, pistachio, almond and hazelnuts) in Abella Supermarket in Khalidya. Then early this month my colleague recommended to stop by in Al Rifai Nuts & Kernels.

I visited the branch in Al Nasr Street (Opposite of All Prints) which I came to know later that they have the most selections ranging from nuts, kernels, dried fruits and coffee beans. They have shops in the malls too but they sell nuts only.

The main reason of my visit in their branch was to purchase Arabic coffee beans and other local dried fruits. Honestly, I am clueless about coffee beans because personally I am happy with my instant Nescafe coffee.

So I consulted one of the shop attendants who was very helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about their products. After discussing the type and taste of available coffee beans, I made the decision to purchase one kilo and requested to grind it.

After learning that the coffee would be used for a company related event in Finland, the shop attendant recommended to vacuum pack it. She also explained on how to prepare the local coffee.

Then I bought local dried fruits and some nuts, and all was vacuum packed.  For local consumption, the nuts are packed in ziplock plastic bags.

For those who are fond of nibbling nuts, Al Rifai Nuts and Kernels is an ideal place to shop. I personally love their cheese cashew nuts. Their nuts are of premium quality and as expected their prices are slightly expensive.

Watching the Dubai Fountain Show

You will know that something is great because the news travels very fast. It will be the subject of conversation everywhere from within your circle of friends to a stranger you meet in the bus.

This is how I came to know about the fountain show in Dubai Mall. My curiosity aroused because I had been asked many times if I already watched it. This was like two years ago.

And finally, we watched the fountain show (shame, only after 2 years!). After a long walk and window shopping in Dubai Mall, we headed to the fountain area. It was past six in the afternoon.

The fountain was showcased as it danced “gracefully” with the beat of the music. It lasted for about 15 minutes and there was really a crowd anticipating for every show. But don’t worry, there is a show every half an hour in the evening. If you didn’t manage to find a good spot to watch, then you could wait for the next show.

(Late Afternoon Dubai Fountain Show)

Day

A week after we stayed in Ramada Downtown Dubai where we had the privilege of watching it in the evening from the top (32nd floor). And wow, it was great! The lights were stunning as it contrasted with the darkness of the night.

Review: Ramada Downtown Dubai Hotel

Thanks to my good friend, Gina, who hosted our stay last month in Dubai. We had a wonderful stay at Ramada Downtown Dubai Hotel and it was a perfect accommodation because it was closed to Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. Our schedule for that weekend was a tour in Burj Khalifa – the world’s tallest building. We stayed in their 2-bedroom suite in 32nd floor and it gave us a stunning overlooking view of the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. It has a balcony too but I didn’t have the courage to hangout there because I was feeling dizzy (and dreadful about the height).

Anyway, our room was remarkably nice – a master bedroom with spacious bathroom, a second room with the twin beds and a bathroom, a laundry room with washing machine and dryer, guest toilet, a kitchen with spacious fridge, microwave oven, bread toaster, induction cooktops, dishwasher, cutleries and plates, and basic cooking wares.

Not only that it has an amazing overlooking view, the room was very spacious too for family weekenders like us and there is a Spinney’s supermarket just few steps away from the hotel. As I mentioned in my previous post, having a nearby supermarket is always a plus point for me. Like for instance this time of stay, we ran out infant powder milk. Glad that the Spinney’s is just few steps away.

On the other hand, my mother and sister enjoyed their evening walking around because it has beautiful pathways surrounding the manmade lake and the bridges connecting to Dubai Mall.

Also, we have the opportunity to see again the fountain show in Dubai Mall but this time the view was better – it was overlooking. We just missed the music but the fountain show was amazingly beautiful from the top view.

Because of our hectic weekend schedule, we really didn’t have the chance to experience the level of their service except during our breakfast time in Orchid Restaurant in 2nd floor. We came at past 10am, not a very ideal time because they close at 10.30am.

After 20 minutes, the waitress came already to our table to notify that the buffet sections would be cleared in 5 minutes.

All in all the food was ok. The buffet selection was limited and the service was horrible. I mean the waiter and the hostess/waitress were actually very friendly and polite but it seemed the two staffs were not enough to accommodate the guests in their small restaurant.

We couldn’t find a clean table because all the available tables were not yet cleared though the guests had been gone already. At first, I thought we were not really served properly but then I realized that the guests behind us were also looking for a clean table to sit and dine.

The pool looks great from the top but again we didn’t visit their recreation area.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in Ramada Downtown Hotel in Dubai. The location is very ideal, just walking distance from Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. The view is amazingly beautiful. It seems the poor service in the restaurant became insignificant as we truly had a wonderful stay in our hotel room.

Where to Find Shoe Repair Shop in Abu Dhabi?

Perhaps this information is nonsense to share but when I was new here in Abu Dhabi shoe repair was quite a challenge. For women, our most common issue is the repair or replacement of heel tips as it easily wears out. The shoes are generally in condition except for the heel tips.

Two years back, I moved my accommodation near HSBC Bank in Airport Road. Luckily, there are small shoe repair shops nearby but I would say quality is not really that good. They do the repair manually and my new replaced heel tips do not really last that long.

Going in that area for shoe repair only is not really worth the trip. In the evening, it is nightmare because the area is congested and the traffic is bad.

Then last week, I went to Marina Mall for some office related errand. I stopped in a shop called “Minutes” which is located just opposite of the check-out counters of Carrefour. Minutes is known for rubber stamp making and that’s the reason I dropped by.

While waiting, I discovered that they do various repairs like watch and shoe repairs. I have not tried it yet thus I cannot vouch for the work quality but I am really glad to find such shop inside the mall. It is very convenient and accessible.

So for a simple repair job like heel tips, it is easy. You can drop by and come back later after you finish shopping. If you have any shoe repair experience in Minutes, let us know your feedback!

Where to buy Maternity Clothes in Abu Dhabi?

It is quite a challenging task to find maternity working clothes here in Abu Dhabi. Although you will find some casual clothes for pregnant women, maternity office clothes are hard to find.

So after asking few of my pregnant friends, I came up with the following shops that sell maternity clothes.

H&M (Abu Dhabi Mall): I highly recommend this shop. I like the designs and so far this is the only shop I visited that has more options of working clothes for pregnant women.

Studio Style (Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre): Good selection for casual maternity clothes and prices are reasonable.

9 months (Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre): I accidentally discovered this maternity shop in the ground floor. It is just a small shop and their products are made from Turkey.

Max (Al Mariah Mall): Located in the ground floor, they have selection of casual maternity clothes at very affordable prices though designs are very limited.

MotherCare (Marina Mall): This was the first shop I visited. Quite costly and they have limited options only.

If you know any shops for maternity clothes, please let me know!

Second Hand Books

I still need to find proper shelves for my new collections.

Even before I embraced the life of sensible frugality, I always believe on buying second hand novels books. I love collecting and reading books but I do not have the means to cave in always to such indulgence.

So following my post earlier about places in Abu Dhabi where you can hunt second items, I scoured the Dubizzle looking for a good deal of used books last month. Then I hooked up with a woman who read voraciously and fortunately has the resources to buy new books.

Initially she was selling the used novel books at Dhs 10 (USD 2.74) but after negotiating we agreed to slash the price into half considering that I would buy the entire books.

And now, I am proud to add another 136 books in my collection with the genres (detective, crime and thriller) I really enjoy reading.

If you have books to donate for me, let me know and I will be more than happy to receive it. Rest assure your books will be at home in good hands.

Where to Hunt Second Hand Items in Abu Dhabi?

United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country wherein the population of expats is in greater proportion than the UAE nationals or also known as “locals”.

Working expats here just come and go. This is the reason that you can always find a quality second hand items stretching from kitchen appliances, furniture, car, and so on. When expats leave the country, they only have three options – to donate, to sell or to send it to their next destination.

So, if you are like me who recently adopted the last name of “Frugal”, then a second hand or used items shop will be a good hunt, right? Personally I refuse to invest in extra items at home because it will imply extra luggage, more things to pack or to dispose, and a waste of money.

When we shifted to our new flat, we bought the basic appliances and furniture only – washing machine, fridge, bed and cooking stove. Luckily, we had colleague who would be stationed in another country. So we became the generous recipients of his sound system, sets of cooking ware, wall décor, books, lamps, and more though we still need to buy a dining table.

If you are considering to hunt for used items, here are few venues to start.

Dubizzle – This is a famous online classified ads ranging from cars, properties, job opportunities and other miscellaneous stuff.

Souq.com – Souq (Arabic word for market) offers online shopping for new and second hand items.

Spinneys’ Board – Spinneys’ is a premium supermarket scattered in Abu Dhabi and other Emirates. They usually have a board located in the main entrance. You can find ads for second hand items which are for sale.

Nefertiti Used Furniture – A colleague of mine had recommended me this shop but I have not visited it yet until today. According to my colleague, they have a good collection of used furniture and household appliances.

Classified Ads from the newspapers

Bazaar.ae – This is an another online classified ads (which I haven’t explored yet).

REVIEW: IKEA – Marina Mall Abu Dhabi (UAE)

One of IKEA’s mock-up living room and kitchen area

I bet..  ;-)  You can track pieces of IKEA products in most of the households here in Abu Dhabi. Either you are renting only a room or being accommodated in a villa, some IKEA items are definitely visible everywhere from bathroom, kitchen, kids’ rooms, living room and even to car compartments.

So, you may wonder why people here have such fondness to IKEA products. I’ll answer that with few questions.

  1. Do you want to organize your cluttered room?
  2. Do you need more space in your kitchen area?
  3. Are you looking for reasonable and quality duvets or pillows?
  4. Are you scouting innovative ideas on how to maximize your small bedroom?

These are only few reasons that people flock in IKEA. Also, the prices of most of the items are reasonable. No wonder that people from all walks of life just simply storm IKEA for any household concerns.

One of my closest friends is an IKEA girl too. She visited me here in Abu Dhabi last week after working for more than a year in Qatar. And guest what? She only asked me for one thing – to take here to IKEA in Marina Mall because she missed it as there is no IKEA shop in Qatar.

So we walked around and she shopped for some items for her new room. Then as we headed to the counter, I couldn’t help but really admire the creativity and innovation of IKEA products. It seems that they invented solutions to whatever household concerns you may have.

I would say also that the product displays are strategically planned and marketed.  You can spend time also in a corner where items are priced for AED 10 (USD 3) or less.

Anyway, my friend was indeed very happy when we parted ways that night.

If you are planning to move here in UAE, IKEA is worth a visit for your household needs.
